 The Software Development Manager is responsible for building great teams and great software. They are a combination of a highly technical hands-on software engineer, capable project manager, and effective people manager.  This position is tasked with fostering and growing technical talent and ensuring the development team builds high-quality, impactful features to support our internal operations. SDMs embrace servant leadership to help establish a strong engineering culture at Card Kingdom, that values software quality, personal accountability, and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on feature development (~50%), delivering great user experiences on our suite of internal tools and services
  • Serve as technical adviser to developers of all levels and provide perspective and guidance on appropriate programming techniques and software design to satisfy feature requirements
  • Coach and mentor software engineers to encourage professional growth in both behaviors and competencies
  • Collaborate with team to drive great process and a great team culture
  • Effective performance evaluation, including ongoing, timely feedback and periodic formal evaluations
  • Manage software projects to meet commitments for time and quality
  • Work with Development Leadership to ensure consistent technical and process standards across teams and throughout Card Kingdom
  • Establish a culture of quality and accountability within and across teams
  • Create an environment where software quality and safe, rapid delivery is an expectation
  • Manage the recruiting process for new and replacement positions to maintain appropriate levels of staffing and training
  • Organize and encourage team learning opportunities
  • Foster a development and team culture that embraces the core values of autonomy, mastery and sense of purpose
  • Work with other Development Leads to help establish and communicate the long-term technical vision for Card Kingdom

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline or equivalent work experience
  • 7+ years’ experience building software solutions in an enterprise or start up engineering environment using JavaScript, PHP Frameworks (Laravel a plus)
  • 3+ years’ experience managing and growing software engineering teams as a people manager
  • Experience identifying and nurturing outstanding technical talent
  • Strong knowledge of relational and non-relational databases
  • Strong knowledge of API design and distributed backend systems
  • Strong knowledge in software architecture, data structures and modern design patterns
  • Experience establishing and enforcing coding and process best practices
